In my role as director of the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) Center for Heart and Vascular Research, I aim to unite and support researchers across the University of Nebraska system to drive discoveries that improve patient care and prevention strategies for heart and vascular disease. Every day, our scientists and clinicians work to unravel the complexities of cardiovascular health, transforming knowledge into better treatments and outcomes. My own research focuses on understanding the molecules of the human heart and how they contribute to both health and disease—from congenital defects to advanced heart failure.
From these experiences, I know firsthand how science can reshape our understanding of heart disease, and this impact extends across communities.
Progress in battling heart and vascular disease also depends on education and outreach, equipping people with the tools to lead healthier, longer lives. None of this is possible without the generosity of our community partners, whose support fuels innovation, raises awareness, and extends the reach of lifesaving resources. Through the American Heart Association Leaders of Impact campaign, I am committed to advancing research, empowering scientists, and strengthening communities—because together, we can change the future of heart health.
“This mission is deeply personal to me. Heart disease has taken the lives of people I love, and in my roles as a research group leader and Director of the UNMC Center for Heart and Vascular Research, I see every day how science can transform the future of heart health. By working together with the American Heart Association, we can turn research and community support into healthier lives for all.”
Heart and vascular diseases are the #1 killer in Nebraska each year.
The UNMC Center for Heart & Vascular Research was established in 2019 with the goal of bringing together scientists and health care providers from across disciplines, departments, colleges, and universities within Nebraska to develop innovative solutions to prevent and treat heart and vascular diseases.
“The American Heart Association awarded $3,322,078 in new funding to Nebraska researchers in 2019-2023.”
